A place for children and women in the heart of Aoyama

In 1976, Ms. Keiko Ochiai, a former newscaster who became a feminist writer, opened Crayon House as a children’s bookstore and moved the establishment to the current building in 1986. The building is a unique place dedicated to the needs of children and women with women’s book store on the 3rd floor, wooden toy store on the 2nd floor, children’s book store on the 1st floor and an organic restaurant and food store in the basement.

Started with the goal of creating a place where children and adults can connect through books and where adults can also gather around children, Crayon House now engages in activities in the areas of education, women’s well-being, food and environment. In addition to providing a place where people can gather around these themes, it publishes magazines, children’s books and regular books as a medium to provide information.

Organic vegetable heaven for vegans on Mondays

Organic Restaurant at Crayon House is a buffet-style restaurant serving really healthy foods using organic ingredients. On meat-free Mondays, all the dishes served are vegan.

At lunch time, the restaurant is full of people with different colors – office workers, locals who live in the area and stopped for a quick bite, foreign tourists… – and you can see how it’s become like a second home for a lot of people. No wonder why, because there is no other place in Aoyama where you can have all-you-can-eat, delicious organic vegetable dishes, brown rice and miso soup for only 1500 yen.

All foods are flavored with natural ingredients and additive-free condiments, and all the ingredients are written on the display (I think only in Japanese…) so you would feel safe even if you have allergies with particular foods. On every 10th, 20th and 30th of the month, the buffet becomes gluten-free, so if one of those days happens to be Monday, it’s a vegan, gluten-free buffet.

At dinner time, several dishes are added to the lunch menu. On this day, there were fresh salad, tempeh and soy meat teriyaki, gratin, fried tofu in sweet and sour sauce along with some other dishes, 2 kinds of rice, miso soup and 4 kinds of desserts – if this is not a feast, I don’t know what is! I really love how they use ingredients that are in season like the miso gratin with rape flowers and rice with cherry blossoms.

Unlike lunch time, there are a number of families with children at dinner time. I think it’s so great that there is a kids-friendly place that serves safe and healthy meals in the heart of Aoyama.

While the buffet is completely vegan only on Mondays, on other days also, most of the dishes are vegetarian except for the main dish, so it may be worth a try.

Hope you visit Crayon House and experience the foods that are truly nutritious for the body and soul.
